Wetherby Blues: Wednesday, July 24th

There is no man so good, who, were he to submit all his thoughts and actions to the laws, would not deserve hanging ten times in his life. -Michel de Montaigne, essayist (1533-1592)

Happy Birthday Emma!!!

  • Patrick James Dunn For She's a Jolly Good Fellow! Hip Hip Hooray! This black lamb sends along birthday greetings to Miss Emma from The Lake District!

Hi Pat Thanks for the update from the Lake District. Next time you are in New West you will have to see a  coffee table sized book depicting that very same area. Maybe you will recognize some of the scenes amongst this collection of two hundred year old copper or steel engravings. Wonder if Reswick and Derwent Water, and even Buttermere, are actually there. Bought this book in Victoria when i was about 17. For two dollars it was hard to resist even if that ate up my entire weekly allowance of the time. Looking at the old musty edition now, it seems amazing as it dates from the time of the Napoleonic Wars,

Hitched through Northern Yorkshire in December of 72, in bright sunshine out of Bradford and across a part of the Yorkshire Dales. The scenery was windswept and open. The villages had ancient looking stone buildings, open spaces and loads of atmosphere.

Indeed i have not responded yet to Monica, nor did Oliver when he was here. I guess i am ambivalent about contacting her.

Ellie is coming tomorrow. Was away a lot with Oliver or Anna as you know and on Sunday i will take the car with Ellie to Salt Spring where i will stay till mid August.

    Meanwhile enjoy your travels, bob

Hi Bob! Great to hear from you! Glad all goes well. I was first in the Lake District in April, 1970 so were were both there not that far apart although I think you probably saw more than I did at the time as we were really only in and around Grasmere. We left Keswick, (I'm sure it and Derwent Water and Buttermere will be in book you mention. Love to see it.), at 9:45 am yesterday. First stopped at Ullswater to see the lake there then Pooley Bridge for a short stroll around the quaint village and bought a copy of Daily Mail with headlines announcing future king! (Request from Chloƫ!)

On to Rheged, a huge presentation centre with an IMAX. Took in a wonderful photographic exhibition by University of Cumbria art students. Bought a number of books there we'd wanted as gifts. (One a cook book by chef Peter Sidwell from Keswick and another, about "Alfred Wainwright, (17 January 1907 – 20 January 1991) a British fellwalker, guidebook author and illustrator. His seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, published between 1955 and 1966 and consisting entirely of reproductions of his manuscript, has become the standard reference work to 214 of the fells of the English Lake District."

Then M6 to outskirts of Sedbergh, (This is where friend Jamie went to school. We stopped on way to Lake District, on Sunday morning, so didn't go into village this time around.) Then to Kirby Lonsdale, on A65, past Settle towards Skipton. Caught A59 there to turn off through Ilkley to Otley, with a petrol stop at Pool, (£94 but that included a 65p Daily Mirror deluxe souvenir edition of royal birth!), then past Harewood House, (Chris and Cora Lee will visit it today.), between Pool and Collingham.

Stopped at latter for groceries at Tesco Express, (I found a £ coin in front of till so that almost paid for groceries, (£24), salad fixings for tonight's dinner, as it turned out. (I was planning to fix one for last night's supper but we had delicious  take-away fish and chips and mushy peas from a local shop and rest of gang didn't want to wait!), then over bridge over Wharfe River, into Linton past Windmill Pub, local establishment we'd had a pint or two at earlier in stay, and Wetherby Golf Course, (dinner there the first night with Chris/Jim), and then home.

While I was readying myself for a ride, Corinne read message from her brother, George, telling us that Dusty had been hospitalized for last few days with a lung infection. He was to be discharged yesterday but his heart rate was quite low so he has been kept in for another day of observation. Of course, we trust that he will make a steady recovery and will be back at Falcon soon. I can certainly understand your ambivalence about Monika. I must say that she seems to have changed very little over the years, (based on a reading or her messages), inasmuch as her manner appears to suggest that people around her should be at her beck and call!

Perhaps something is lost in translation and I'm being a tad harsh but she was a spoiled child back in the '80's and seems to have retained this character trait. Your time on Saltspring sounds idyllic. Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS: Corinne has been in touch with a Durston relative, 3rd cousin Chris Durston, who is now Sales Director for Durston Garden Products, in Street, which has a 150-year history as a Somerset peat producer. We plan to visit after stopping in Bath for a day/night, or more, after leaving Wetherby. Coincidentally, Chris will be in Bath this coming Friday as his mother is having a hip replacement there that day.

Pics: Some snaps of Sedbergh School, taken on way to Lake District; two of serving staff at the Horse & Farrier, Sunday evening, Edwin and Erastus, both originally from Kenya; then some from walk around Buttermere this past Monday.

Dear ILP or is it LIP:

Great hearing from you. Did you bump into Wordsworth in Cockermouth? I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with your bladder. I've heard of kidney stones, but this mushy pee stuff sounds serious. I see that you may have blown your travel budget on petrol so I'm offering to send you some Depend® Guards for Men.

I lived in Keswick for a good number of years. But that was in Ontario. Is there a difference? Please keep us abreast of your goings-on. It's okay if you use the pseudonym: Gulliver. Our best, --Kurt

Hi Corinne and Patrick, hope all is well with you two, I just wanted to verify check out date as August 5th? And what should I do about leaving keys behind?
