Pre-Departure Blues: Thursday, July 4th, Independence Day!

The most certain test by which we can judge whether a country is really free is the amount of security enjoyed by minorities. -Lord Acton (John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton), historian (1834-1902)

noun: One who incites quarrels.

ETYMOLOGY:

From make, from Old English macian (to make) + bate (contention), from Latin battuere (to beat) which also gave us abate, debate, and rebate. Earliest documented use: 1529.

Hi Raymond!

Thanks very much for both sites! Now I only need to pack my swimming trunks and cycling gear so do appreciate the forecast. Hope the Golf/Country Club Jim belongs to and where we might dine one evening won't mind me showing up in bathers and a Yellow Jersey!

Thanks also for getting me on the road reasonably early yesterday morning. As you probably know I continued on out to UBC and followed the standard MD/Musqueam/Camosun/Imperial/16th Loop, with a few added dipsy doodles around UBC, to make it back where we started with 102.8 K over 4:53:14, AVG 21.0 KPH, MAX 55.3 KPH on the clock. Bit of a push into head wind, at times, but along Spanish Banks a chap in flip flops and riding an older, rattle-trap flew past me. Couldn't accept that, given, his gear and heavy bicycle, he could out-distance me so I determined to catch him.

Managed to do so and was able to draft behind him for much of the way along the flats and then didn't have any trouble on the climb. Had to chuckle to myself as I noticed, near the top of Foreshore Hill, that he took his ear-buds out. He seemed to be sweating profusely, by this time, and I suppose his ears were filling up with water! Anyway, I congratulated myself, comparing my efforts to members of the peloton catching breakaway riders! Really reminded me how much competition, at any level, really, can spur one on to better results.

Matt and Catherine were over for dinner last night and we had a most enjoyable time on the patio. Over the course of the meal we told them about our itinerary and they shared stories of their most recent adventures at the Orkney Islands Music Festival. Sounded simply wonderful, (although hurricane winds were almost frightening!), a smaller version of VFF, with indoor venues. One set of performers were stunning Cree fiddlers from Manitoba.

In a museum next door to their B&B, they were told to see a paddle made from one of the trees blown down during last Stanley Park natural disaster. Apparently there is some canoe race held off one of the Orkney Islands and I gather one of the teams was an indigenous group from Vancouver. Sounds like a most interesting spot to visit, aside from the fact that their are two malt distilleries there, Highland Park and Scapa Flow!

If I take a "recreational" ride today, I might pop by and inspect paint job! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Had to call Sarge upstairs to help get bbq to light. Of course, he needed a dram for his trouble!
Hi Velma and Ernie! Trust you are both well. Sorry that it has taken me so long to post this review. No excuses but plenty of reasons! We are trying to get ourselves ready to fly to London on July 10th. Starting to feel the pinch now since Father Time's clock is tick, tick, ticking away and D Day, Departure Day, is approaching with alarming speed!

We fly to London, then train to Yorkshire, then drive to Cornwall, for the month of August, (house exchange), then Eurostar to France, Languedoc, (rented a house for September), then two weeks on the Canal du Midi with three other couples, (One of the couples, Michele/Wayne, have a daughter, Nicole, who told us about Wiki Wiki as she and her boyfriend, Marvin, used your services when they flew to LA a few months ago!), on a canal barge. Not home until October 19th, just in time to volunteer for the Vancouver Writers Fest! All the best. Cheers, Patrizzio!

This is what I posted:

"I cannot emphasize how impressed I was with the service provided by Wiki Wiki Park n Shuttle! Velma and Ernie were wonderfully friendly and more than efficient. The fact that one can have complimentary hot chocolate and/or coffee just makes the parking and shuttle to/from the airport even better. Felt almost like a personalized limousine service. The online registration is straightforward and easy to use. It also allows changes to schedule, if required, to be made so that is reassuring.

There is no question that we will continue to use Wiki Wiki whenever we fly from Bellingham. Cost is almost laughable, (as competitive or better than other sites available), but hardly a consideration given remarkable service provided !
Do yourself a favour and park with Wiki Wiki! Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!"

But Poppa I am already in a heat wave down here!!!!

Hi Tinsel Town Meltoids, et al!

All the better to be able to withstand the rays of England when you arrive! You'll spit on British temperatures!!! Ray banks sent along site I forwarded to you, as well as one for Tour de France. We will stay with Jim/Christine Brownlee in Wetherby, near York, when we leave London. Met them a few years ago when Ray/Sylvia did a house exchange. Lads went to school together in Hartlepool, near Newcastle.
Love and Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio The Nudist! We Don't Need No Stinkin' Loin Cloths!

Hi Sir Patrick. Great to be in touch. Thanks for your itinerary.I bought my ticket for Beziers today.I leave on sept11 as planned same times etc but return on sept18 leaving Beziers at13.31.Hoope this is ok. Thanks for all your other news. Look forward to seeing you both soon. Love Sir James andLady Patricia.

Hi Ski and The Great Ronaldo! Sorry that you can't join us in Languedoc , (We miss cooking and drinking wine with you both as well!), but Celtic Colours, (congrats on landing job), sounds wonderful, as does time in Cape Breton. Maybe we can orchestrate something in Switzerland next year as we have very good friends in Berne an Zurich. Cora Lee sends her best wishes, to you both, as do I. Buona Fortuna with travel plans whatever you decide. Cheers, Patrizzio "Nine Lives" Dunn!

Hi JWo, (and JT)! Sorry to hear your sad bike saga but I urge you to have bike repaired and start cycling. Well worth it, especially in this weather! Thought I'd include our itinerary in case you win lottery and your employment plans change! Haven't had a chance to talk to Branko about Scott but will do so as I need to ask him a few computer related questions before we leave. Cora Lee sends her best wishes.Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS: Two of Joanne's friends, Patricia Anne and Pamela, if I remember correctly, "crashed" the party. They were at Granville Island and bumped into Asha, the daughter of a couple who live in our building, and she invited them along. They knew each other from working in film business. (At least I think that is the general sequence.) Furthermore, just by chance, I invited a couple passing by to join festivities and Sean, husband, works as a director of photography in same industry so they all knew people in common. Maria, Sean's wife and mother of Olivia, their darling 18 month old, is of Polish-Ukrainian background from Saskatchewan so more Good Prairie Folk! They live in building opposite ours and are looking to rent a place in Harbour Terrace so perhaps they'll be here when we return.

Thanks for the pictures and the itinerary, we couldn't catch up to you if we tried!!!  Have a fabulous trip and take good care out there. Joanne.

Hi JT!

Glad you enjoyed snapolas. Please pop down, at some point, before next Tuesday, if your busy schedule allows, to allow me to give you a kiss and a peck and a hug around the neck. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Beatricce! Glad wedding plans are coming along nicely! Cora Lee sends her best wishes  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Bob!

Fabulous graphic! Simply loved it! Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply but starting to feel the packing pinch. I'd like to come to YVR to be part of the Ancient Grains Welcoming Committee but I'll have to see how things are going by then. I let you know, one way or another. We are still planning on brunch on Tuesday, however.
Cora Lee sends her best wishes. Buona Fortuna with poster plans whatever you decide. Cheers, Patrizzio "Man of Natural Fibre" Dunn!

Hi Pat, Just had West Indian Jerk Chicken, done on the barbecue. Fabulous made in Vancouver sauce. Anna and Ellie made a pie together - rhubarb and strawberry pie from scratch. We sat outside. Thanks for feedback and update. Yes this was with iPad.

Here is one from Monday night, July 1st - your reporter on the spot. If i already sent this then put me into assisted living please. bob

Hi Videographer Extraordinaire!

We just had bbq'd chicken with Teriyaki Sauce, with ginger and sesame, but would like an order of rhubarb and strawberry pie to go! Enjoyed the quiet side of Galiano. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Penguin, Gladys Knight & the Pips, O Susannah and Champagne Charlie!

Thanks to one and all for the best wishes for our coming trip. Much, much appreciated.
Cora Lee sends her best wishes, to one and all, as do I. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Fisher Folk!

From vineyard worker to hook baiter in a weekend! Some transformation even for a slippery Naramatian!!! Not to mention your green thumb. Enjoyed the wonderful snow peas and broccoli yesterday. Did them in a stir fry and they were more than scrumptious so thanks again.

Cora Lee sends her best wishes, to you both, as do I. Buona Fortuna with your own travels. Cheers, Patrizzio!

De(e)(a)r Defiants:

Gotta rap this up real quick as I am now on to ravens. As for the deer and sheer evidence of their droppings, I suggest that anyone who is interested stay with us for $1,500.00/week U.S. and I will personally point you in the right direction of deer fecal emission. Turds like you have never seen before...guaranteed! Your humble guide and slick salesman.

Hi Slick et al!

Sorry, but my cash is going to the Mike Duffy Defense Fund!
As a rule, I don't pass along these "add your name" lists that appear in emails, BUT this one is important.  It has been circulating for several weeks and has been sent to over 20 million people. To show your support for Senator Mike Duffy, please go to the end of the list, add your name and forward to all your friends.

1.  Mrs Duffy

 2.

PS: Guy/Vittorio, would either of you consider representing, pro bono, Mike? Cheers, Patrizzio!

I too must make this quick. Dinner guests are arriving and I am being pressed to finish dressing and go downstairs to oversee the staff mixing the cocktails, massaging the lettuce, etc. I pause only to point to Aristotle's ninth principle: in nature, all other things being equal, the bigger the Enthymeme, the bigger the turd. Yours in science, G.

Dear Quack, Mountebank and Pseudo-Scientist et al!

Charlatan that you are, I gather from your obvious lack of informed judgement that are a proponent of cold fusion as well as the Big Dump Theory! I counter with Aristotle's Eleventh Principle: In the kitchen, don't massage lettuce or mix cocktails after handling matters scatological! Yours in Absolute Truth, Patrizzio The Alchemist!

Hi Sir James!

Glad all went well with your reservations. Times will be fine. Anyway,  you should be able too walk to Neffiès if I'm too drunk to drive when you arrive!  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Pat, Thanks for the email. Good that you enjoyed Canada Day.

Glad the graphic worked for you. Knowing your busy schedule (a little), i will be surprised to see you out at the airport, but if you do, that would be great! Oliver skyed me yesterday on Galiano Island and the signal dwindled to nothing, but he is excited. Also learned from him, that Monica is heading to Canada to see Henning, if i understood him correctly.

Anna and i had been camping on Galiano, at Montague Harbour Prov. Park for several days. We were in the walk in campsite. No major incidents so far with my 14 year old so far – she is holding up remarkably well to the constant freight train of embarrassments, allegedly staged by her father. We came by inter island ferry to Salt Spring yesterday and are now at Ellie's. Enjoying the comforts of life here. Anna is loving Salt Spring too. The two are about to create magic in the kitchen – a strawberry/rhubarb pie.

Apparently, i am expected to do some work too, so i had better get crack'n on the chicken now. Best, bob ps: and now a video showing first Ellie in the kitchen and Anna deep inside a story.....over to you Pat.....

Hi Salt Spring Sojourners! Quite enjoyed the two videos, (iPad?), particularly one showing Ellie at work and pans of lovely interior, balcony and garden/yard. Paradise indeed!

Speaking of "The Germans are Coming! The Germans are Coming!", the Great White Hunter is coming for lunch, along with Laura, on Saturday. We are readying ourselves to be reminded about what is wrong with the Known Universe. May well find out more about the Monica connection. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Nirvana. See, from video, that  Bhudda has discovered Salt Spring! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Rosemary and Andre!

Trust that you both well. Thought I'd include our itinerary in case we can connect in London and or Cornwall, as well as in Neffiès and than after canal trip with you in Chabeuil. (I gather Tour will whiz by you, between Valence and Chabeuil!) Cora Lee sends her best wishes to you both, as do I. Let me know about when/where we might meet. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Dottore!

Trust all goes well with you and your Lads! Thought I'd include our itinerary in case your plans change!
Cora Lee sends her best wishes to you three, as do I. Let me know about when/where we might meet, if such is possible. Cheers, Patrizzio!

OK, not sure I want to hear the details of you various adventures. Pure envy on my part! Sound fab, say hi to Corinne for me.

Hi Chris!

Cora Lee says hello right back to your green with envy self! She is in bed, with a cat on her tummy, reading her grandmother's diary, record she kept when she and her husband went to Europe to visit the grave of their son, George, shot down over Germany. On that same trip they journeyed to town of Durston, in Somerset, village from which relatives emigrated to Canada. We plan to visit there, ourselves,, after Stonehenge and Bath, on our way from York to Cornwall, to find long lost, fabulously rich relatives! At least that is Cora Lee's fond hope! "Cousin, can you spare me a dime?" Enjoy Vancouver for us while we are away. Actually, hate to leave when the weather is so glorious. Cheers, Patrizzio!
