Greetings from Kerrisdale. Hope you are well (fully mended from most recent bicycle mishap?) and that you enjoyed your travels to California and other points. Just wanted to check in with you about Friday . . . confirm time (6:00 p.m.?) and get your coordinates. I've been to your place before, but it was quite awhile ago, and as I recall, it was slightly challenging to find the way in. (Or maybe not - my recollection is a bit vague.)
Also please let me know what I can bring . . . .I am copying this to Eyob who will need the above details as well . . . .I'm looking forward to seeing you and Corinne again. as well as Eyob's family, particularly as I have never met the younger two of his three kids . . . . ) See you Friday! Janet
Hi Janet and Eyob!
Really looking forward to this coming Friday! Glad we have finally been able to arrange a date.
We plan to serve chicken, if that is acceptable fare for everyone. If not, please let us know and we'll try to accommodate any requests. Some sort of potatoe or rice or ancient grain dish, (Cora Lee is gluten free), with a vegetable and salad. If you, Janet, could bring a dessert, that would be wonderful/delightful.
With regard to arriving, anytime that is convenient for people, with respect to work finishing etc., so after 5:30pm is just fine. Let me know about suggested menu and we'll plan accordingly. Cheers, Patrizzio! PS: Unfortunately, there is a Construction Zone outside our patio so you will need to come to the front entrance and call our apartment. We'll buzz you in and meet you in hallway.
Hi Inners. Thanks for message and kind regards, and especially for the photograph of my wife. She's looking quite well, time has been good to her. I look forward to seeing her in the flesh tomorrow morning at MEL.
Yes, my China sojourn was instructive, occasionally enchanting.
Aside from a brief time in the Mississippi Valley I haven't been in a
landscape so dominated by such powerful geographical form, it is hugely
wide, serene, traffic laden but blissful. Megacities
emerge from the River mist, new bridge spans grow from riverside
industrial estates, fly across the water and disappear among forests of
residential towers.
Three Gorges Dam arrests your imagination - 2km long, holds back
the water of the 3rd largest river in the world for 600 miles, and
generates enough electricity for base load to 450 million people. Wu
Gorge (the fabled second) still rises several hundred
feet above water level, mists swirling to the sky.
K tells me you're in France about the same time we're in Italy/Denmark. What dates? Cheers to y'all.
Hi again, Stefano! Certainly enjoyed your poetic description of some of your recent travel experiences, almost like looking at a classical, traditional Chinese landscape painting!
Have attached brochure and rates for Beau Soleil. I have rented the property in Languedoc for the month of September. I will pay deposit, (€250), to owner, (He lives in Vancouver.), before we leave in July. I'm planning to arrive in Neffiès on or about September 1st. Since place is able to accommodate up to 10 people, (Three bedrooms, loft, couches, etc., but I don't expect that many at any one time, however), what I plan to do is to figure out costs, (based on €1300/month), and work out a rough daily/weekly cost once I know who is coming and when. Basic, overall rate is about €44/night so depending on occupancy that could drop even lower, excluding €50/per person cleaning/laundry charge, regardless of length of stay.
We are meeting Flamin' and Sarge, and two other couples, in Agen, (about 120 K south of Bordeaux), about three hours away from Neffiès, on September 28th, to start our two week Canal du Midi boat cruise. If you decided to come to France you are welcome anytime but towards the end of September you could stay on for last two days even though we won't be there. Just a thought.
Hi Patrick Here are the details of the order for the two Monties. I told them that price would not be an issue given the exchange rate etc and lodged your deposit. They seemed to have the deliveries from the supplier in hand and be satisfied on storage. We can keep the deliveries in sight as we proceed towards your arrival. My diary says you arrive am on 17 July.
We arrived back from Austria last night having managed to dodge most of the central European floods and in fact enjoyed mostly sunny days. The combination of heavy snow on the mountain tops, green Alpine meadows and chocolate box villages was most attractive.
Unfortunately our only free day was a Sunday and shops were closed so we couldn't hire bikes. It was interesting to see the number of cyclists slowly working their way up the Grossglockner Pass.
On the topic of the Yorkshire agenda, we could perhaps drive to the Lakes via Wensleydale drive northwards through the Lakes and stop over one night or two if you prefer. That way you see some of both National Parks and fit in a walk, either flat or hilly. As we haven't managed a trip to Cumbria this year yet this would suit us too. Given the uncertainties of our weather I would recommend we defer detailed plans until you arrive in the UK.
Best wishes Jim

Cora
Lee will be in Italy until about the 20th, (Both of us leaving London
around August 30th/September 1st, she by air, I train), with some of her
Book Club
Sisterhood so she will only be able to spend one week in Neffiès.
Whirlygig and Robo Man, (cycling mates), are still "toying" with the
idea of joining the Nubile
Swedish Masseuse South of France Seminar for Tired Cyclists. Anyway,
take a look and let me know what you think and if keen/able to squeeze
in a visit, I'll book you and Workin' Woman in! Cheers, Il Conduttore!
- Ayn P, Chloe Alexis Dunn and 2 others like this.
- Astri Mccurdy Not vegan??
- Chloe Alexis Dunn Hey Astri, I have dipped my toe back into the meat pool.....not full time but a little bit here and there, sometimes it freaks me out, the thought of eating meat, other times I crave it. So I guess I'm just figuring it out as I go.
- Chloe Alexis Dunn Your bakery looks amazing by the way!!! good job, i'll have to make a trip out at some point to try all your treats!!!
- Astri Mccurdy 2 of my kids consider themselves bacontarians. No meat other than bacon. It's a thing...
- Astri Mccurdy We would love to see you!
- Chloe Alexis Dunn yeah that's how it started for me, with the Pig on the Street truck, they are friends of mine and when they opened I joked as a veg of 12 years I would eat their bacon if they ever made it on the food channel show Eat Street, and low and be hold they did!!! The producers were pretty excited to get me to eat the bacon, the show actually just aired a couple weeks ago!!!Patrick James Dunn Saw Krissy and Mark running on the Seawall, near Olympic Village, yesterday morning, while riding towards Stanley Park. Krissy said she was "knackered" and Mark's knee was giving him trouble. Their pooch seemed fine, however!

Hi Folks, Patrick, I do hope that you have fully recovered from your accident? I
have been meaning to write but have been very busy. I had a very close
friend pass away 2 weeks ago from a long 3 year battle with leukemia.
It was so tragic as she lost her husband unexpectedly
in March of this year. They had just made arrangements in February to
put their home up for sale and move immediately to a beautiful
apartment where they would not have any stairs to climb to get to a
bathroom. The week of their move his pulmonary fibrosis
takes a turn for the worse and he is dead 3 days later. She only has
one daughter in town and another in Ottawa for support. The poor woman
didn't even have time to mourn his passing when she had to move to the
apartment and begin the tedious task of sorting
the contents of the house . Meanwhile she is under going blood
transfusions, dr appointments etc. Very very tragic.
Aunty Mary turned 100 this past Saturday. I had a small luncheon for her with all her nieces and cousins. A total of 15. On June 2, Ron my brother held an open house for her where she was presented with birthday greetings from various political parties etc. As we do not speak to one another I made sure that I had recorded on her calendar just when my arrival to town would be so he made sure I would not be in town for this occasion. I was also in the process of making an open house but abandoned the plans when I heard that he was in the midst of planning a party. He really shocked me as I did not think he would do anything special for her. But he came thru.
I have been averaging a trip to see Aunty Mary every 2 months for the past year. A small airline offers such great prices from Toronto to the Bay that price is no longer a worry. Ron is very secretive when it comes to Aunty Mary's health and I know that when she does pass I most likely will only find out from a friend when they read about it in the newspaper. Diane, (Tommy's daughter) who lives here in the Bay has requested from Ron that she be kept informed but sadly it has fallen on deaf ears.
Aunty Mary still goes for routine blood transfusions about every 6 weeks for 1-2 pints of blood for her suspected colon cancer. Her mental faculties are the most noticeable from trip to trip but that should be expected shouldn't it. She becomes confused easily as to the time of day and I am very suspicious that she is up all night. Her daily home care providers have got her into a good eating routine this past year so that she is at least eating something nourishing and taking the proper numbers of pills. She still will not hear of ever moving from the apartment. Too bad because it would certainly stimulate her so that she is not alone. Mainly she spends her day sitting and staring blankly at the tv and napping. In fact when I reminded her that mom passed away on her(aunty Mary's) 95th birthday it definitely had no impact. I would say that she is in a good and happy place to be. We should all be that lucky. Her hearing is so bad when talking on the phone that I rarely call her anymore. That is the down side of all of this.
It has been a very rainy and cool spring both in Thunder Bay and Kingston. I fly home tomorrow and hope that I will be able to get my deck stained before my company arrives next week from TBay. At the moment I have no plans for the summer. How about you? I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and we are not even building a house this summer so it should be a quiet couple of months for me.

Hello all,
Porto
Sunday – Landed in Porto and picked up our luggage – great joy!!! – Jo-Anne’s bag was there.
Took the metro into the city, and got off at the Casa da Musica
station, where we switched to the 204 bus which took us right to the
hotel.
15 euros each for a 3 day pass vs. 40 euros for a taxi. After
we checked in and dropped off our luggage, we went up the hill in back
of the hotel to the Serrales Foundation Contemporary Art Museum and
Park.
Sunday was the last of a 2 day festival (Serralves em festa 2013) during which the park was free as was the gallery.
The gallery collection was very much “out there” in terms of art – made the Tate Modern look staid.
In the park itself there were bands playing (not what I’d call
music – one band was 5 women all doing their own thing – at full volume –
not beat, no harmony, no melody – just noise) and various vendors of
crafts and organic produce – including wine
– which we bought. On our way back, we passed a barbeque
place (bbq over coals) and got a chicken and some salad to take back to
the room to have with our wine – the red was fantastic!
Monday – Took the 204 from our hotel to the end of the line – Foz. The Foz area is right on the Atlantic Ocean. We went to a little seaside café (called Tavi) for breakfast. After a couple of double espressos, I was ready to face the day ahead (Jo-Anne only needed one cappuccino.) We took the 500 bus which runs along the river to the beginning on the Ribeira district, and then took the metro over to the other side of the river, and walked down the hill. Jo-Anne felt that she had reached the promised land. Port Caves (or Cellars or Houses, or Lodges) as far as the eye could see. We started with Burmester, then Calem, Kopke, Noval, Sandeman, Offley, Croft, Taylor Fladgate, and Quevedo. We only did a couple of tours, but had a few tastings. Then it was bus-metro-bus to the hotel. We deposited our purchases, and headed out to get more barbequed chicken.

Tuesday – Same as Monday – went to Tavi for breakfast (only one double espresso today), and then up to the Ribeira
district. Took a boat trip on the Douro, then walked across the bridge to the Vila Nova de Gaia area and the Port Caves.
Went to Silva (fantastic aged white port!!!!), Ramos Pinto and Ferreira, before walking back.
Stopped along the way for food and had something called a
Francescina – a sandwich with ham, pork, and spicy sausage, topped with
melted cheese and covered in a spicy sauce.
It is a local speciality – something to be tried once. Took the 500 back to Foz, and then the 204 to our hotel.
Time to pack, as we have an early flight. -Colin
