Vancouver Writers Festival Blues: Monday, October 21st

You can never understand one language until you understand at least two. -Ronald Searle, artist (1920-2011)

Jo Nesbø is a musician, songwriter, economist and author. His first crime novel featuring Harry Hole was published in Norway in 1997 and was an instant hit, winning the Glass Key Award for Best Nordic Crime Novel (an accolade shared with Peter Høeg, Henning Mankell and Karin Fossum). The Harry Hole novels have been a huge success, hitting bestseller lists across Europe and selling over 9 million copies worldwide. In 2010 The Snowman took the UK by storm and spent more than three months on the Sunday Times bestseller list. The Leopard was an instant hit, going straight to no. 1 in the Sunday Times hardback fiction charts, and the paperback is in the top ten overall bestsellers.

Patrick,

This is just a friendly reminder about your Food & Beverage volunteer shift TOMORROW, Tues Oct 22, for the Vancouver Writers Fest.
Please check your Assignments tab on My Volunteer Page for details about your shift, i.e. what you are doing, where, when and who to report to....
Many thanks! We are so looking forward to your help and are so very grateful!
We could not do this festival without you!

Patrick James Dunn Don't miss this!
Jean Homsy and Peter Edwards like this.
  • Bob Altwein Could you send the show over here for a virtual viewing please. Looks great!
  • Wayne Sutherland Are you back in Vancouver.
  • Patrick James Dunn Best I can do for now, until you pop by for a visit and I can show you the brochure with thumbnails of all the photographs. We were almost the only people in the gallery as it was the first day of the public exhibition and late morning. In fact, we went through twice in the sense that we retraced our steps back through each of the three galleries to revisit each of these truly remarkable portraits. The juxtaposition/groupings of the images, (politicians, artists, photographers, writers, actors), alone was mesmerizing. Wish you could have been along, Bob, as with your keen eye you could have provided an even greater technical insight. Of course, the prints speak directly, and powerfully, dynamically so, without the need for mediation of any kind but it never hurts to know more about the craft involved. In a very real sense, it was time travel to see these iconic images as many/most of them have been burned into our collective unconscious, perhaps even define the individual and their times for the viewer, so able was Karsh able to capture the essence of his subjects.
  • Patrick James Dunn Other part of poster outside MBAC!
  • Bob Altwein Yeah, looks like a great show. I will have to live with just seeing the brochure then. Only hours ago VAG Director Kathleen Bartels announced that Beijing's Palace Museum is sending some 200 objects on tour. A year from now, when you come back from next year's trip, you can catch this blockbuster here in Vancouver. It will probably be the greatest display of art treasures here since the Rijksmuseum paintings came our way. When are you due back in Vancouver?

Dear Valued Volunteers,

Here we go, it's Monday the 21st and the Festival begins tomorrow!
Whatever your job this week, it is as important as any other volunteer role and know that YOU are a VITAL LINK in the entire festival.

Never say "I'm just a volunteer". Instead, please think of yourself as a donor and as an essential cog in the wheel. All this to say: We are depending on you.

There won’t be a lot of time or opportunity to find out things ‘on the job’ or to fix anything that’s going wrong, so it’s really important that you understand as much as possible beforehand what you’ll have to deal with while on-shift. Forewarned is forearmed.
Review your job descriptions carefully, know your volunteer schedule and wear your volunteer badge while on shift. It's your entry ticket to the venues.

Hello Donna Maria and Heraldo!

Well, we are now back in Vancouver after being away for a little more than 13 weeks! Funnily enough, I was going to send you an email as I had a vague recollection that you said you were going to be in Vancouver towards the end of the month. We start our volunteer shifts with VWF tomorrow. Mainly in the evenings with the exception of next Sunday. Not sure what you schedule will be but perhaps we can have a coffee and a chat one of the days before you fly off into the wide blue yonder. Give us a shout when you are settled into you apartment and we can see what might work best for everyone. Back to Vancouver on Saturday! Love to you both from Cora Lee! Cheers, Patrizzio!
