Blackwater Blues: Thursday, August 22nd

The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone. -Harriet Beecher Stowe, abolitionist and novelist (1811-1896)

Medusa, a gorgon
As soon as I figure out the Mac air emails..  going to a class tonight to end some frustration!! The teenie print is driving me nuts! Look forward to further emails from you about your trip!

Cheers!  Hello to Corrinne! (Cora Lee?)  JWoWe are waiting for our flight from Amsterdam to Stockholm.  We had great weather here and did the Rijks, Van Gough, Stedjyk, Petite Hermitage, Geelvinck-Hinlopen, Willet-Holthuysen and Van Loon Museums.  Bought the museum  card Amsterdam and got our monies worth.  When we arrived at the Van Gough, the line to buy tickets was two hours long and we breezed straight in with the MKA, a MasterCard moment.  We visited the Rijks five years ago when a temporary collection was on display in a wing but the renos are now done and the collection is now open in its full glory.  The expected floor  was quite crowded but the other  two floors were not and the displays done using technology to its fullest.  We walked everywhere.  Made an attempt on the Anne Frank House but the line was very long, next trip.

[Gorgon, any of the three monstrous sisters Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa in Greek mythology, who had snakes for hair. They turned into stone anyone who looked into their eyes. From Greek gorgos (dreadful)]

We did a canal tour on a boat owned by the hotel.  It was built in 1909 and used by Winston Churchill and Queen Beatrix to tour the city after liberation from the Germans.  The Petite Hermitage had a display of Peter the Great.  He loved Amsterdam and spent a lot of time here.  It was a memorable display, especially his House Party Rules.  I managed to find Dutch designed shoes and other stuff at Marlies Dekker (YAH).  We found a wonderful restaurant with nouvelle Italien /Dutch cuisine, ate there twice it was so interesting.  The Dutch are very friendly and all speak fluent English, an easy place to visit.  Off to see Stockholm and then to the cruise ship on Saturday.  Cimcky has emailed that he is happy and been bribed with bacon.  All is well, Love Francesca and Gregg

Hi Maggie: Congratulations from Cornwall! The Goils in the garden of the house we have in Blackwater until the end of August. Ayn, our eldest, has been over from LA, since the 15th, leaves this coming Sunday. Cheers, Cora Lee and Patrizzio!

Thursday, up at just before 7:00am to javanate and scribe. Melange of beet greens and diced, overleft pastie for breakfast, much to the horror of The Assembled Sisterhood. To Brian Etherington Farm Shop for seven juicy sirloin steaks for this coming Saturday's dinner with Maureen/Bill and Penny/Mickaelovich, and two "Summerliving Instant Disposable BBQ's, with charcoal  & starter sheet, ready to cook in 20 minutes, Cooks for up to 1 1/2 hours", £1.99 each, of which I remain skeptical, Dear Reader, unconvinced of their efficacy, yet to be proven. We shall see and smell and taste what we shall see and smell and taste, I suppose! Purchases made, then to drop The Power Shoppers at the bus stop, being Truro bound that they were while I repaired home to scribe, diligently, until around 3:00 pm. Find that riding in the heat of the day, (Not complaining about the wonderful sunshine, mind!), can be more tiring than it already is with the plethora of hills that lie everywhere, in all directions, waiting ever so patiently for the unsuspecting cyclist. Decided I'd try for another 20+ KPH AVG so when I'd slathered on my sunscreen and donned my camel pack I set off for Carnon Downs:

Most enjoyable outing although I must admit that in order to attain the AVG I desired I could never allow the slightest opportunity, on the flat, relative or otherwise, (especially on the downhill runs), to go unexploited. so it was a constant battle of give and take, of loss and gain, against both the undulating terrain and the two unforgiving hills out of Chacewater and then Porthtowan. Once these two had been bested I knew victory was mine, although my legs were not quite as convinced after each steam puffing, lung labouring ascent.
Still, I was more than pleased to roll up to the patio at Sydney House, to find Coriandre reading the paper, sipping a glass of chilled wine at the table, Spudnik lolling in the shade beside her, her reward for just having cut the grass of a thousand lawns, with a push-mower, no less!  Quick infusion of java and then a shower to ready myself for the viewing marathon to come.

A Sainsbury's' 2012 Casablanca Savignon Blanc, 13.5%, a rather remarkable, intense citrus mouthful, more grapefruit that I've ever tasted in a wine before, mingling exquisitely with a just the right amount of minerality on the lingering, clean finish, to help us through the first episode of Game of Thrones of the evening. Stunning value for the 2x£12 Sainbury's' Specials, true bargains we have come to love and seek out. Gluten-free sausaugen, new spudniks, boiled, (not old Spudnik, boiled, Dear Reader!), tomatoe/red cabbage with Cheddar with Hot Garlic, saladin and large wedges of Toblerone for dessert with a Macallan chaser. Trundled off to our beds to set sail for the Land of Nod by just after the first stroke of midnight, dropping off before the last chime sounded!
