Blackwater Blues: Monday, August 5th

To know another language is to have a second soul. -Charlemagne, King of the Franks (742-814)

Hi Moe!

Trust you and Mary are both well. I tried to accept your invitation on Linkedin but system seems to have me unlisted under an earlier email address so I've sent you an invitation!
Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both. Cheers, Il Conduttore/Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick,Obviously you are enjoying life to the fullest. Regarding the Linkedin, this happened due incessant effort of the program that continuously wants to update the status. So do not worry. Thanks. Moe

In the airport in St. john's headed back to Vancouver after 4 day trip. Corey William Rebecca Frazier and Avery are staying for another 10 days. It was a short trip but had a great time. Thanks Wayne Connors and Peggy Connors for looking after us. Great time at the Kitchen Party.

Hi Patrick & Corinne What great pics. Looks wonderful there.

Sadly we have some terrible news. Our neighbour Mary Kowal's daughter was killed in a bike/SUV accident last Monday. Leanne was riding a bike on West 12th Ave and fell into the traffic. She had severe brain injuries on impact and died a few hours later. It has been devastating as I'm sure you can imagine. Leanne was Mary's only child, she was 42. The funeral service will be held on August 13th at St. Augustine's church with a celebration of life memorial held immediately after at Jericho tennis club. Our neighbourhood has been hit hard by this news and we are all rallying to try & support Mary & Dan as much as possible.

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news but thought you would appreciate knowing. Love, Elaine

Hello, Dear Elaine!

What shattering, devastating news. Thank you for taking on the very difficult task of informing us, given that it is, understandably, such a terrible, terrible time, for all concerned, particularly, it goes without saying, for Mary and Dan. Please convey our deepest sympathy and let them know we are grieving with them and for them. Sadly, obviously, words are of but little comfort in the face of death, let alone under such circumstances as ones you have described. I am sure everyone in your closely knit community will be of immense support to Mary and Dan, although I'm sure you all feel the loss as if you, yourselves, were the parents. Hardly bears thinking about, the nightmare we all dread, at some level, conscious or otherwise, whenever we learn of the death of child, anywhere, under any circumstances, belonging to a friend or relative. I suppose we all imagine what it would be like if one of our children was torn from us and can barely imagine, even begin to imagine, what it must be like for the parents who have lost a child.

Hard to know how one can continue to go on but to the extent that you and Ted, and the rest of your friends, are able to offer such comfort and support as is possible, we know Mary and Dan will somehow be able to endure the unspeakable pain and suffering that has shattered their lives. Again, our heartfelt sympathy, especially to Mary and Dan, to you both and your deeply shocked community of friends.

Much Love, Corinne and Patrick.

Hi Chloë and Ayn!

Had message below, from Elaine, an hour or so ago. Think you both know Mary and Dan. She acted as our real estate agent when we bought The Loft. Take care of yourselves! Love, Dad!

Hi Pat,

How are you? Where are you at present, on the Isle of Royal Births?

As you well know what follow is largely a cut and paste. I will comb through it once more however and hopefully my proofing will be as thoroughly edited at your boilerplate templates. Don't want end up calling you Sweetie, or something like that, by mistake. Those very early stages of memory loss are quite relentless.  :-)

Here on the Salt Spring Island the roads are cluttered with produce stands, unmanned of course but with the usual "honesty boxes." The other day we purchased stuff nearby where the payment was "by donation" instead. Can you believe that? We picked up beets and a crispy flavourful cucumber. Ellie made breaded oysters for lunch (with a trace of smoked paprika powder) and fresh barbecued salmon for dinner. I put together a potato salad which was modest by comparison. Everything tasted fantastic. We ate outside of course.

We have been here since last Sunday having come together from the Mainland. On Wednesday we took the ferry to Vancouver Island and drove way past Sooke. We camped beyond at the French Beach Prov. Park. The campsite was on a high bench overlooking a belt of rainforest with big trees, spaced far apart and a dense understory of exploding salal. The Strait of Juan de Fuca appeared in the distance as fragments of light, We had a big fire and our clothes got completely smokey. Slept that night close to each other and in our clothes, jackets included, but we were somewhat protected from the damp, cold ground by an extra tent floor and camping mattresses.
Thursday morning we took camp down very quickly. It was 12ºC on the car temperature gauge. No wonder we were so cold! Had breakfast an hour later in Port Renfrew, that looked like an outpost at the end of the road (and the beginning of the West Coast Trail). Drove up and over scruffy looking and partially logged off mountain sides. before reaching Lake Cowichan. Tried to find the peak where i did relief duty on a lookout tower back in the summers of 1969-70. I had been on a fire suppression crew in Lake Cowichan back in the art school daze. Two hours later we passed north of Duncan and hooked up with the Island Highway. No more fog and damp breezes – a balmy 24ºC instead. Spent that night at the edge of Qualicum Bay and in a cheap beachside Motel room, albeit in a tiny room. The weather was turning and out in the Strait there were whitecaps.

Yesterday we were at the Filberg Festival. Caught the country rock flavour of Fred Eaglesmith. Not Snobby Bobby's go to music genre but i have to say that the show was hugely entertaining and the band excellent! The back up musicians included three woman on drums, bass and guitar, all with big hair and huge talent. The guy from Vancouver on guitar and banjo was awesome too. The location in Comox is a dream. Couldn't believe the demographic however – barely anybody under 50 there. It felt like a baby boomer event with even Fred Eaglesmith making jokes and hectoring the audience – now don't give up your youthful revolutionary ideals for those darn RRSPs the gadfly said.

Now we are back at Ellie's. Wednesday i go off to Sooke on my own for two nights, to clear the way for a friend of Ellie's to come and stay. Here place is after all small and this is a good time for a break. Will be in a little cabin by the sea. Back again Friday. We have to make a pasta salad with for 140 wedding guests. We are part of a group of friends helping out one of the neighbours whose daughter is getting married.

I will be back on the mainland on by mid August. Will you be moving on to France soon? Will head into town now for some groceries, then hope to start a new painting on the balcony. Best Wishes, bob

Hi Pedrito and Gemma!

Trust you are both well! Thanks for sending along link to terrific wedding pictures. What a wonderful, wonderful  gathering. Congratulations again.

Enjoy your wine tasting weekend. Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both. (Hope we'll met Dr P at some point in the not too, too distant future.) Cheers, Patrizzio
