Dom Marcello Bad Knee Blues: Saturday, November 9th

I like not only to be loved, but to be told that I am loved; the realm of silence is large enough beyond the grave. -George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), novelist (1819-1880)

Sat Nov 9 - early morning

Not much new to report. The current word is that my surgery will be on Tues. In the meantime they are working away on balancing the elements of my blood work which caused the surgeon concern on Thurs.

As a friend with doctors in his family pointed out, you don't want to have surgery on a Friday before a long weekend - if there are complications chances are good it won't be your surgeon who will be dealing with the follow-ups. A silver lining with the delay I suppose :-)

Cheers....Paul

Hi Paul!

Pleased to know that things are going reasonably well in terms of readying everything for surgery next week. It's quite obvious you need malt to balance your blood work! Silver lining indeed!

Not sure if you have been in contact with Kjell recently. Had a long voice mail from him yesterday which we had missed until just a few minutes ago and it seems he is in dire straights with respect to his knee, the one he injured playing tennis earlier in his visit.
At any rate, I called but a few moments ago, and talked to Jane as Kjell was still sleeping. Her "take" was that she thought that there was no real reason why he couldn't come. She can drop him off inside underground parking area and from there the walk to our place is but a relatively short one. We even have a pair of crutches we can offer. Anyway, she said she would talk to him about his reservations and he is supposed to call later this morning to discuss the "situation". I mention all this, in part, as Joan left a message saying she will be coming at 6:30 pm and that is wonderful! I think Jane will join us even if Kjell is adamant about not moving. Perhaps if I tell him you are coming he'll be more inclined to make trek!

Nevertheless, it is more than upsetting to have you both dealing with such stressful medical issues. Not to say that your significant heart surgery compares equally with Kjell's potential
arthroscopic procedure but still worrisome. Cora Lee just chatted with Joan and all is well on that front, as far as her joining us! Once again, if there is anything we can do or perhaps give to Joan, while she is here, for you, (books, hootch, DVD's), please don't hesitate to let us know. All the best for now. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Pat and Corinne,   We had such a lovely weekend with you and I must say the bridge fairies were very kind to us. Hopefully, we'll continue this on the island in January. We played scrabble after you left and I was lucky again. I think that my birth month is bringing me some very good luck. As always, the day we left was gorgeous and sunny which was very good for winterizing cabin. It went well, but took about 3 hours. In the future, we may keep it open for winter visits.

We then took Rick's parents out for a thank-you lunch in Kamloops at Harold's, famous for big hearty lunches, one of their favorite places. The drive home was spectacular. I wish my eyes were a camera because some of the winter views highlighted by the sunset skies were amazing. This weekend, we have had a fabulous evening with the Dunkley's drinking very nice red wine from California and B.C., eating sushi and playing scrabble. Today, we enjoyed 18 holes of golf with the regulars (Tony and Jerry) and are preparing food for a birthday celebration with the kids. Cheers for now, and may you have happy travels down to California. Ruth

Hello Digitale and Fingare!

Trust you are both well. Sorry I've not been in touch sooner. Once again, no excuses but plenty of reasons! We were back home on October 19th but almost immediately thrust into volunteering at the Vancouver Writers Festival.
I'm off on Monday, November 18th, to drive to LA to house/cat sit for a cousin of Ayn's, in Simi Valley. Cora Lee will fly down. This being the case, I'm wondering if you are interested in hosting a Canadian that Monday, November 18th? If not, don't worry as I'll just keep driving south as I need to be in Simi Valley by the 21st. At any rate, let me know your thoughts and we'll plan accordingly. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Donna Florida and Cactoosian!

Trust you are both well.
I'm wondering if you are interested in hosting me, probably Wednesday, November 20th? Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Patricio, it's good to know you made it back safely. Any plans to descend this way over the holidays? Would be good to see you and listen to your new Cornish accent! Cactus, who is doing well and thriving in retirement but who has various firefights going on about neighborhood association issues so he's hoping he is not lynched, an American custom.

Hi again, Cactus!

Good to know that you don't actually read my missives! You along with Penny in London and rest of my family, Flamin' in particular! Placed my request to stay, strategically at the end, in order to see if friends actually read The Diaries! Like the chap somewhere in South America and faked his death to see if any friends would come to funeral. None did!

Anyway, in case you've already deleted message:

I'm off on Monday, November 18th, to drive to LA to house/cat sit for same cousin of Ayn's, in Simi Valley. Cora Lee will fly down as she has too, too many important meetings, (having been away for three months!), to take time to drive. Will celebrate your Thanksgiving there with Ayn and Los Horridos. Both of us will be back on December 3rd. This being the case, I'm wondering if you are interested in hosting a Canadian, probably Wednesday, November 20th. If not, don't worry as I'll just keep driving south as I need to be in Simi Valley by the 21st. At any rate, let me know your thoughts and we'll plan accordingly. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

I am up to here in neighborhood association entanglements; you can presume on our hospitality and friendship, but you cannot depend upon us to get to the buried treasures at the end of the 18 mile hike of events....I'll ink you in on our calendar so you can consider the guest suite booked! Cactus

Hello Beatricce and Patrizzia!

Trust you are both well. I'm wondering if either of you will be around, (either in Healdsburg or LA), for a visit. I plan to stop in Sonoma, probably Wednesday, November 20th, to collect some wine I have waiting for me at Soda Rock and Coffaro, so if free, Patrizzia, perhaps a java or a bite to eat in Healdsburg before I continue on to Berkeley? Beatricce, we'd love to see you somewhere/sometime in LA and you are more than welcome to have Thanksgiving dinner with us if not involved with other friends/family.  At any rate, let me know your thoughts and we'll plan accordingly.
Fondestos and Cheers to you both, Patrizzio!

Hi O Susannah and Champagne!

Hi Aquitaine!

Trust you are well. Did you travel this summer? Bike?
Hope we can connect before Christmas. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Joe and Rose!

Great to hear from you! Trust you both well. Stayed with Lynne and Peter, (Sorry we didn't have time to pop by and say hello!), and had a marvellous time with them, when in Naramata last Sunday. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Pat,

The forecast for tomorrow isn't great but I am an optimist so I'm not giving up on the idea!  I'll check back with you later this evening.

In the meantime,  check out this website, Velominati.  Here are some guys (99.9999% of the writing and commenting is by men) who love to write about cycling - they are totally obsessed but are pretty funny and mostly very literate.  Enjoy!

Check out the Rules - there are about 90 of them!!  I like the rules, and abide by a few of them,  but I cant' say that I'm 100% behind #9

Rule #9
// If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.

Fair-weather riding is a luxury reserved for Sunday afternoons and wide boulevards. Those who ride in foul weather – be it cold, wet, or inordinately hot – are members of a special club of riders who, on the morning of a big ride, pull back the curtain to check the weather and, upon seeing rain falling from the skies, allow a wry smile to spread across their face. This is a rider who loves the work.

Sale on Selected Wines

Even if you can't be here in person, we want you to feel like you're here in "spirit," and you can do that by taking advantage of this special offer, good on a first-come, first-serve basis. These are four wines which were produced utilizing our estate fruit from the 2012 harvest, and which have never before been available on any of our order forms. Because of the very limited availability, we'll be selling these by 12-bottle case lots only, and we'll have to ask you to limit your purchase to just one case of just one wine, so take a look at these notes from Matt and our personal staff picks to help you decide which case to choose:

2012 Mourvedre - $180 case including shipping and tax - Dave's Pick (also a Catalina favorite)

100% Mourvedre - We have grown this Rhone variety for many years but this is our first stand alone from our own vineyard. This wine showcases raspberry, spicy and fruity flavors that just scream for a spread of good food, in the company of good friends! We purposely chose to use less new oak and less time in oak, making it a great wine to enjoy while young and vibrant. So don't be afraid to open it up with your Thanksgiving dinner, Hanukkah dinner, Christmas dinner, or heck, even Tuesday night dinner!

2012 Cuvee Naturale - $180 case including shipping and tax - Pat/Catalina's Pick (also a Matt favorite)

66% Zinfandel, 17% Carignan, 17% Lagrein - An expression of the fruit, this wine was fermented with the natural yeast from our vineyard and aged in neutral barrels to allow for the wine to speak for itself.  It is very fruit forward, with great structure and intrigue, while maintaining a complexity despite having very little oak influence.  This is our first foray into a commercially produced, naturally fermented wine.

2012 Peloursin - $180 case including shipping and tax - Cindi's Pick (also a Pat favorite)

100% Peloursin - Being the parent of Petite Sirah, you would expect dark flavors with heavy tannins.  What you get is a much more delicate and submissive wine that does have a lovely bold flavor enhanced by the oak.  The tannins are subtle and the darker flavors are of blueberry rather than dense blackberry as is in the Petite Sirah.

2012 Matt's Select - $180 case including shipping and tax- Matt's Pick (also a Catarino favorite)

58% Lagrein, 42% Zinfandel - A blend of two of our favorite grapes on the vineyard, this is an early release of the regular 16-month aged Matt's Select.  Think of it as a barrel that we bottled for Dave's cellar and a little extra to get out to our members.  Very round and fulfilling mouthfeel complements the French oak barrels to craft a bold yet drinkable wine.

How to Order

Just click on this link which will take you to a special order page. Since these wines are so limited, we feel that we will start running out of one or more of them very soon after sending the offer, so we have set up the form so that you can tell us if would like to receive something other than your first choice. We are planning to save a few cases for the holiday open house on December 7th, so if you're planning to join us for the party, you will be able to taste and order some of these specials at that time.

Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend Special At the Winery

Mark your calendars for the Day After Thanksgiving! Get out of the house. Bring along family and friends. Come by and toast the Holiday Season with us and our Sparkling Petite Sirah! Specially discounted all weekend long.

Other Notes

For those who have requested will call at the winery, October wine club shipments and 2012 futures (aged 10 months only) will also be available for pick up during the Thanksgiving weekend and the December 7th Open House.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Open House and getting these wines out to those who choose to place an order! Either way, have a warm, cozy, safe and relaxing holiday season.

Best wishes from Dave, Pat and all the crew
