Universal Gospel Choir Blues: Sunday, December 15th

A language is never in a state of fixation, but is always changing; we are not looking at a lantern-slide but at a moving picture. -Arthur Lloyd James, phonetician (1884-1943)

Hi Jean and John!

Have been meaning to thank you for lovely eChristmas card! As well, so pleased to learn of Tess's return to health and vitality! Remarkable story.

We celebrated Thanksgiving in Chabeuil, near Lyon, with Guinea Fowl instead of turkey! I drove to Tinsel Town, (Cora Lee flew as she, with all her volunteer commitments, didn't have time for a road trip!), to celebrate American Thanksgiving with Ayn and Los Horridos. Managed to fit in some wine tasting en route! Just back in time to celebrate my 66th and really haven't stopped since then.

Been another busy week. Saw close friend, Big Al, this past Tuesday when he and Colleen, his wife, brought over the desk he is fabricating for Chloë. The four of us took the three pieces from his truck up the elevator to loft and then he fitted them into place to ensure that everything fit, as measured. Few minor adjustments but nothings serious. Next stage will involve powder coating the metal to provide the finish Chloë decides upon.

On Wednesday I volunteered at the Aunt Leah's Xmas tree lot, on 54th and Granville, (NOt sure if you knew, or not, that Chloë has been working for this non-profit since March: http://auntleahs.org/contact-us/), and pleased to say it was loads and loads of fun. Far busier than I ever imagined it would be, given day of week and shift time. Must have had something to do with glorious day. Started out my shift by collecting an urn of coffee from Starbucks on Granville and 64th. Pleased that they are supporting Aunt Leah's. Later on, noticed a Skate Canada logo on one customer's parka and I asked if she knew Flamin' and Sarge. In fact she did, as well as Peggster and Mr Fixit, ("Those Newfies" was her immediate response!), one of the other couples on canal barge, as she, Margot Delorme, had volunteered with them at the 2010 Olympics! Another woman came in and we actually put her tree stand on her pick and then plopped it into the back seat of her Mini Cooper! She said that she can only come looking for a tree when it isn't raining as she obviously has to put the convertible roof down. Other volunteers were interesting individuals so when we did have a few spare minutes it was fun to chat. Before I knew it, shift was over. Think sales, overall, are going very, very well so I know Chloë is pleased.

Went for a grand ride on Friday. Cycling mate, Georgio, couldn't join me as Amira, his daughter, was to swing by for lunch. (Had a call from him when I just leaving SP I but of course, couldn't stop to answer phone! I called him when home and made sure he understood that my new mobile is for one-way calls only. If I happened to be in a ditch, somewhere in Richmond, or down an embankment from Laughing Stock, for example, since I was already on the Burning Ground, I could call for help! Otherwise, line was not for idle chatter. Emergency Use Only. If you receive a call on that number you know things are serious!!!) At any rate, I left around 11:30 am and it really was quite magical as a light mist/fog enveloped English Bay/North Shore. Freighters looked like ghost ships until completely obscured. Bit of a heavy drizzle on second of five Prospect Hill Loops but after that stopped it was dry and not even a drop of moisture on my jacket. What was there was soon whipped off as I hurtled down hill, topping 50+km/h on each descent. Something I shied away from earlier, worried about icy spots, of course.

Temperature was positively balmy compared to rides during deep-freeze we experienced so I was toasty for whole outing. Only negative aspect was stretch of bike path from top of slight hill near the Inukshuk all the way to roller hockey rinks, covered with goose feces. Never seen it so completely festooned and I had to make a conscious effort to avoid deposits so large and plentiful were the droppings. On way to SP, on the way up this same rise, I had to dodge a number of the plump birds sleeping right in the middle of the path! Mentioned to a number of "recreational" cyclists ahead of me, at the time, that I was surprised that they had made it through the blockade themselves. One of them laughed and said, "They sure don't move, do they!" Nevertheless, I certainly enjoyed the ride. Stats:

Back home by 3:30 pm or so, to shower and change. Cora Lee was volunteering at AL Thrift Shop until 6:00 pm so I worked on getting dinner ready. Had invited Whirlygig and Sarge for dinner and bridge. Kerry was Christmas shopping, with Tia, her daughter, and Flamin' was in Edmonton, visiting a friend. As things turned out, The Shopping Sisterhood ended up at GI so they came by around 7:30 pm and we all enjoyed dinner together. Lots of fun playing and insulting one another's bids. Dusty came to partner with Sarge while the Goils looked at all the "finds"!

Took Sarge to YVR on Saturday  morning at 8:00 am. He is also going to be in Edmonton but will be there until end of next week. He is presiding at an RCMP hearing. Will stay tonight with Des and Sheila, the other couple who joined us on canal barge this past September/October.

Had two tables of bridge  last night with Ruth/Rick, friends from Squamish, and our travel agents, O Susannah and Champagne Charlie. R/R were to stay overnight so were looking forward to seeing them for more than the evening. Unfortunately, Ruth came down with a sudden onslaught of the flu late in the afternoon. Rick had driven into ton to play golf with a friend and Ruth joined him later at her niece's birthday party and said she wasn't feeling all that well. By the time they were at our place she felt so terrible that she just wanted to go home to her own bed. While we were obviously distressed that she  felt so ill we knew it was probably better for her to head back to Squamish. Bit worried about her driving, under circumstances, but she phoned as soon as she was home to say that all had gone well on way home.

In spite of missing Ruth, we had a lovely evening. Loads of fun playing bridge, (Dummy from one table would fill in for Ruth so we could still play. Funnily enough, "Ruth" had ome of highest scores and she wasn't even here! Had a fabulous pot luck: Cora Lee produce an amazing chicken; Clarisse her baking powder cheese biscuits; O Susannah had prepared a wonderful orzo salad and Ruthless contributed a fantastic shrimp/iceberg lettuce salad, together with a platter of decadent, homemade chocolates for dessert! Lots of hootch so everybody had a grand time.

Champagne brought bags of goofy bridge prizes. They have their own travel agent home based business so they get scads of promotional things which they always share. Part of fun is simply seeing what will be pulled out of the hat next. Not all of the "prizes" are goofy and I scored quite an attractive, useful iPad cover, carry case, per esempio. Even snagged a toy cruise ship to float in the bathtub with my rubber duck! After gang siad goodnight, we sat in living room and sipped malt with Ricardo and had a good long visit. Cora Lee went to bed at 1:00 am but Rikki Ricardo and I kept chatting until 2:30 am!

Richard left after breakfast, about 9:00 am as he had to head home to put up their Christmas outside lights. We are off to have brunch, Clara/Dusty as well, with good friends, Nancy/David, at their place, off south Cambie. This evening we have tickets for the Universal Gospel Choir Christmas Concert so looking forward to that. Venue is St Mary's Anglican in Kerrisdale. Chloë has taken the day off from working at Granville Island Brewery, (She has been working M-F at AL and then S-S at GIB since March 1st!), today and plans on making chocolate snowballs, here, all afternoon, before we all attend concert.

Might try to squeeze in a short ride later, once back from brunch, as forecast shows a bit of a break in rain between 4:00-:00 pm. Must away now as Cora Lee is barking out orders for me to get ready to leave.

Have included some snaps I took of "The Great Desk Caper" as well as Dusty's Xmas door hangings! Fondestos and Love to you both from both of us. Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year, Cheers, Patrizzio

Help get the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra launched on a European tour, first time ever in the 90 year history of the orchestra. They are GREAT, and my friend Christina is one of the finest violists ever....

We have one last performance of the Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony today at 3 PM in Hertz Hall. We are so thrilled to have so many people join us this weekend so far, thank you for your patronage! Hertz Hall doors open at 2 PM- come early to join us for complimentary coffee thanks to Peet's, to hear our trumpets play Christmas carols, and to learn how you can enter to win a trip to Paris while supporting the UCBSO! • Patrick James Dunn Buona Fortuna! We just returned from a simply wonderful concert, The Universal Gospel Choir's Share The Light Celebrating Yule 2013. Simply marvellous performance. Each number was a gem but the Women's Ensemble's tribute to Harriet Tubman raised the rafters on the church. They had just settled back into place when they were lifted aloft again with the full choir's version of I've Got A Testimony. Franny Beazer did a lot of the heavy lifting with her incredible voice. Hallelujah!

Pat has generously offered to host the next gathering in Parksville on Vancouver Island where he will be housesitting for a friend. The two dates proffered are the 11th and 18th of January -- both Saturday evenings.

Please let us know if you are interested and if so which weekends might work best for you. Accommodations overnight are available both at Kurt's and Pat's. Kurt has offered services as wheelman from the ferry.  Best of the season to all, G

    Franny!
I prefer the 18th--if my vote counts--but am agreeable to either. Cheers all!--Kurt
    Wrath Fiend!

I think you should call me regarding your upcoming trip. It is my considered opinion that you need to reconsider your itinerary, given your time limit. Otherwise, If it's Tuesday, it's Sacramento, will be the certain, unpleasant outcome. I can be reached at home when not riding! Cheers, Patrizzio!

not sure if I can make it out but if I do, Jan 18th would be preferable.

also, update on the facebook page, so far I have Guy and George on my friend list, and I haven't heard anything from the rest, nor have I found you on facebook, so if you do have facebook please send me the name you're using or the email for your facebook account so I can find you. Once I have everyone as friends on facebook I will create the group where we can post links n pics, discuss further etc. VL

    Hi Victorious!

In fact, I sent along this message on November 27th, or thereabouts:

Grand that you are setting up the group, Victorious. You probably have lots of time since you rarely read the selected books! My facebook name is Patrick James Dunn. I see my email address is out of date: pdunn@interchange.ubc.ca is now pdunn@mail.ubc.ca but I gather system simply forwards messages so not a big deal.

I assume I signed on to facebook, back in the 17th Century, with the former address so I'm not sure where that leaves you, Mr Techno Smarty Pants. If you can unravel this particular bane of changing systems perhaps you can unsubscribe me from a host of other organizations who claim not to be able to find any of my past email accounts. Malt for mystery solved! Buona Fortuna!

Let me know if I need to ask to be your friend! Cheers, Il Conduttore!
    Hi Patrick and Corinne,

How are you?  Thank you for your email, so good to hear from you! Glad to hear you are at Aunt Leah's again this year, we were just reminded that you ran into Uncle Dan there last year when they were searching for a tree so late in the season. How long are you home for?  You had such fabulous travels this year, I hope we can hear about them in person soon.

We would love to bring you some baked goods and festive cheer, and we are free on Friday evening or Saturday any time, or the following week (gosh it is getting close to Christmas!) Being a UBC person, I have several days off between Christmas and New Year, although poor Matthew cannot say the same.

We went into town and saw the Gingerbread house display in the Hyatt lobby this afternoon. It was very cute, and there were some real masterpieces. I'm trying to convince Matthew that we need to go on the Stanley Park miniature railway this holiday season... we'll see whether that happens.

Best and warmest wishes of the season, hope to see you soon. Love from Zoe and Matthew

    Gents,

I appeal to your aid.  I am in the process of digitizing my slide collection (and family photos dating back to WWI) but …  I encountered this photo of an obviously dapper, soft spoken, shy gentleman.  I have no idea of who it could be.  Any ideas?

Please note due to a "feature" in Mac email I have not figured out, I had to zip it to send the higher res version.  Just 2-click on the zip file.  More appeals may be forthcoming as I delve into the musky containers of history!  The tagline to this email is a warning! No habrá paz para los malvados/No Rest for the Wicked

Please pass this on to Dusty and Clara

    Hi everyone

Just a reminder that there is church this Sunday 11 a.m. at the Whiteshell Community Club  at Falcon Lake.
In other news  we have an estimate of $10,437.36 for all of the uninsured electrical upgrades to the lower level. This includes bringing the electrical and ventilation up to code,  and installing more energy efficient lighting as well as some wiring in preparation for the access project (chair lift). This does not include taxes and permit fees. This amount also does not include new bathroom fixtures or a new ceiling. On the bright side -we currently have sufficient funds to cover the electrical work.
This will leave the building fund earmarked for the accessibility project intact and will leave the memorial fund available to cover costs related to the medication walk. We will however need to replenish the general fund in the near future but we will talk about that in the new year. Keep your eyes and ears open for fund raising ideas.

We will soon be sending a call out for volunteers to remove the poly and insulation from the exterior walls so the electrical work can begin.
We continue to show an operating deficit for the year of $2,677.  This is the shortfall between donations and operating expenses like heat, light, ministry, insurance, service fees, trailer maintenance etc.  We are certainly being challenged on the eve of our 50th anniversary.
In the meanwhile--see you Sunday if you are in town. Betty Ann Watts
