The Eyob Diaries: Thursday, June 13th

Congratulation: The civility of envy. -Ambrose Bierce, author and editor (1842-1914)

I feel so blessed to have so many wonderful friends all over this beautiful little planet...
  • Patrick James Dunn Congratulations, Cactus! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! Which Nobody Can Deny! Which Nobody Can Deny! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! Which Nobody Can Deny! Which Nobody Can Deny! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow! Which Nobody Can Deny! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Fondestos and Cheers!
David Kessler It's impossible to forget Patrick's inimitable rendition of the tried and true birthday anthem, so I will make believe my ears are ringing....just did a pool lap for every year and more, and could not be a happier 65 year old...
Thanks, I have the directions now! Yes, I missed the attachment the first time, somehow.  But all is in flow now. I'll be there tomorrow with bells on . . . and dessert! Janet

Hi Janet! Glad you are now oriented. However, Maggie will most likely be disoriented by your bells! She'll think you are another feline invading her territory. She'll probably demand a small portion of dessert as a peace offering! See you tomorrow. Cheers, Patrizzio!

     Animadversion:

    MEANING:

    noun:
    1. The act of criticizing.
    2. An unfavorable comment.

    Hello Il Pescatore!

Trust that you have depleted all the fish stock wherever you happen to be wreaking havoc on the environment! Would have enjoyed your company over the last few rides.

Had hoped to go for a longish ride yesterday but weather did not seem to be cooperating at first. Heavy, heavy showers all morning. They were supposed to vanish towards noon with only the threat of a thunderstorm later in the afternoon so I risked everything and took off for Stanley Park, shortly after noon. Given forecast, I suppose, not many people about so I was able to zip along, enjoying Seawall without having to thread my way among bothersome recreational riders!

Decided I'd attempt the PPHL and was doing quite well until the end of the third loop when light rain started, turning nasty as I began fourth round. Pretty drenched by time I'd completed that circuit but since I had dressed for this eventuality I disregarded the trickles descending into my shoes and soldiered on. Temperature was not uncomfortable even though I was riding underwater, (Snorkelflugel came in quite handy, I might add!), but I had to be a tad careful at bottom of PPH as surface was quite slick, particularly as one comes around the dog-leg corner to the right.

Rain/drizzle started to taper off as I started sixth loop and by the time I'd completed the magic seventh, I was almost dry, although still squish-squishing, at times, from the boots. Still, glad I'd persevered as I made it back to The Heartbreak Laundromat, slightly soggy but unbowed and unbroken, with 105.1 K over 5:03:31, AVG 20.7 KPH, MAX 54.1 KPH. Quick rinse and tumble dry and I was ready for bridge lads.

Cora Lee very kindly filled in until Sarge arrived. (He was visiting his new granddaughter, Avery Sheila.). First three contracts were all Four Hearts. First was held by Mick and I and we went down one. Ted/ Cora Lee held next contract and Coramandle played it very well to make it. Next was ours again and we managed to make one over.

Sarge arrived just as we finished first round and we had some interesting hands thereafter. Most notably, Four Spades, doubled, with Ted and I vulnerable. We went down four but only cost us 1,400 points! Glad we were only playing for $10 a point!! Cora Lee/Sarge came out on top, followed by Mick, then Il Conduttore. Ted was low man on the totem pole and we all felt badly as he brought some fabulously delicious Panna Cotta puddings, (made by Elaine), overlefts from the wedding reception.

Sarge is away next week, Mick as well, (to Naramata), but home on Thursday, so not sure what we'll do. Let me know your schedule once you have fileted your illegal catch. Might have to bring up Ragin' from the minors. Thought today's A.Word.A.Day, "animadversion", poifectly described our unkind words and thoughts of last week. Felt even worse when presented with the can of maple syrup! Just have to biteour tongues and pretend we are not really Hungerford types!

Fondestos from Cora Lee to you and your Sisterhood! Cheers, Il Conduttore!

AAaahh Eldorado - the stuff of legend when we lived in Nassau - not always available, we had to sleep with lesser bedmates, Appleton, Mount Gay and Coruba.  The flavour of the gold is proof that proof is not all. Confirmed we're in Rome 25 to 02 Aug-Sep. Love S.

    Hi again, Stefano!

Glad Jet Setter is back home and well and back in the work saddle again! I've passed along your dates for Italy to Coriandre so I assume she'll be in touch. I'm not actually exactly sure where and when she'll be when in country. (Yes, I did meet Joe, at your 60th!) Your trip sounds fab as well but I gather we won't connect. On matters
myxolidian, I actually prefer the Hypomixolydian mode, in duplicate, as it seems to fit better with my split-personality! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Joanne with Chloë; Unlucky lobster awaiting trial by boiling water; guilty ocean floor mates; Judge Joanne pronouncing sentence; Rebekah, Rachael, Cora Lee, Patti at birthday dinner table; Over course of the visit, Rachael spent endless amounts of time with Maggie who seemed to take exceedingly well to attention. Bit of a concern, initially, as Mags can be nastily unfriendly in the whisk of a whisker!

    Hi Joan and Joanne!

Thought I'd bring you two together since I gather you've been too, too busy for each other lately! Congratulations on your impending retirement, JWo! Will have to celebrate with you once we are back in October. Now, if we can get Moneybags Trueman to do the same, then the fun will really begin!!!

This past Sunday, as Freeloader JT knows, we celebrated niece Rachael's 23rd birthday dinner.
Hope we can connect before we are off on July 10th. Fondestos and Cheers to you both, Patrizzio!

Wow!  What a spread you had going there!   Lobster flown in !!  Fantastico!

Last time I had that was in Okotoks Alberta,  just outside Calgary..  boxes of fresh lobster from N.S. in huge vats of boiling water, vats of corn on the cob and tons of butter !   We did the snow shoe races with wooden planks..  and were in hysterics over that one..  mostly falling on the ground rather than making any headway.
Lots of beer and wine flowing .... good thing we were on a farm...  outside..  otherwise the mess would have been horrible! So,  yes,  Joanne and I have not seen each other for awhile..  either one of us is away or has a guest ...  will have to work on that get together..  !!

It's PLo's (Penny) birthday tomorrow, so we're going on an adventure to Park Royal across the water where the pace is a tad slower and mellow.  Since there are a few stores over there, shopping will be in the cards.... May end up at the Red Lion Inn or Rusty Gull pub, or Stamps (Wicklow)  ...  will see how it all transpires..one giant step for mankind....  or was that a small step for libations?

Thanks for the great pictures and for the super description of the food and drinks at the celebration....  !!!  I think you have missed your calling Patrizio!  A wine and food writer for some magazine?

We will lift a glass in your behest tomorrow..  wherever we end up!  We shall try to get together before July 10th!

Cheers and again hi to Corinne!  Nice little kitty you have there......unpredictable but nice as far as I can tell...JWo

    Hello Derek and Gayle!

Have enjoyed your wonderful descriptions of Cornwall so much that we have decided to cancel our trip. Why spend all the money on flights, car , etc., when we can sit at home, sipping single malt and reading about fantastic National Trust sites, pub lunches, cycling hither and yon, and the like! Doesn't mean you can't visit Vancouver but you'll have to pour the malt as we'll be too, too relaxed to move!

Had a grand outing this past Sunday while you were probably picnicking with Gudrun and Steve! (Please pass along our best wishes. Be terrific if they join us at Wuthering Heights, as well.) This makes me think that we will leave you a list of friends you might well enjoy meeting over the course of your stay, time and inclination allowing. At this point, I'm not sure who will be around in August but will find out and let them know about your stay. Will ask them to call and if you have the time and interest you can arrange to meet. Most of the husbands ride most of these couples go for walks around town so I'm sure they would be happy to share their favourite riding/walking routes should such be of interest.

Given your familiarity with city you may well not need much local knowledge. No obligation, of course, but simply think that you might enjoy their company when you are exhausted after endless days preparing/serving food at Pig on the Street! Anyway, possibility will be there should you like to meet some of our other friends.

Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat, thanks for offering to host at the Islay Inn. We will take you up on your generous offer and meet there on 7 July. The book is Indian Horse by Richard Wagamis (George). Kurt has chosen Nabokov’s  Pnin to follow the Wagamis. Victor has chosen Blood's a Rover by James Ellroy to follow the Nabokov. G
